Sponsorships are an integral part of Becton’s role in local communities
across Australia. Typically Becton concentrates in the areas where it undertakes
projects. However, Becton also has a number of ongoing relationships with
a wide range of charities and communities. In Melbourne, Becton sponsors more
than 40 lawn bowls clubs as part of our commitment to creating resort style living
for over 55s.
At the signature project at the Espy Hotel in St Kilda, potential investors pay
a $2,000 reservation fee to buy apartments. The fee is then passed on as a donation
to the Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda.
At Byron Bay, Becton undertook an auction of existing cabins at its North
Beach site to make way for the eco-friendly redevelopment of this coastal
property. All proceeds from the cabin sales, more than $200,000, were
given to local charities.
Becton also sponsors the annual Byron Bay Writers Festival, a major
event undertaken by the New South Wales Government which attracts about 20,000
people to Byron each year.
Becton also sponsors the annual Byron Bay triathlon which was in danger of folding
in 2002 before Becton stepped in to provide sponsorship to allow the triathlon
to continue on a yearly basis. Becton teams have participated in
each triathlon.
Becton’s managing director, Hamish Macdonald, has taken part in the
Victorian Variety Club Bash which raises funds for disadvantaged kids. More than
$1.2 million has been raised for charity.
Max Beck, Becton’s chairman rode his bicycle with a few mates from Melbourne
to Sydney as a precursor to the Sydney Olympics and raised $250,000 for charity.
On top of its charitable and community sponsorships, Becton also assists athletes
to try to achieve their goals of winning Olympic Games medals.
Becton sponsors Petria Thomas, one the world’s top ranked butterfly swimmers
and a bronze medalist at the Sydney Games, in her attempt for gold at the Athens
Games.
Sarah Blanck, ranked number eight in the world in dinghy sailing and another
great hope for gold at Athens, is also sponsored by Becton.
Becton supports donating to political
parties as a key plank in the democratic process as well as supporting transparent
public disclosure of political donations. Full details of the donations can be
